Erie Canal
America wanted to maintain their huge business with steamboats on waterways and in order to do so they needed to expand inwards beyond the Appalachian Mountains. To do this they knew they needed to built a canal which was an artificial waterway.
Construction of the Canal began in 1817 and finished in 1825. It was made up of 85 locks running 363 miles. The canal helped goods and people travel along faster going at a speed of about 55 miles per 24 hours.
Although it cost 7 million dollars the Erie Canal was such a huge success making goods cheaper and increasing cities along the canal. A ton of goods from Buffalo to New York City was originally $100 but after the canal was lessened to $5. By 1840 the United States had over 3,000 miles of canals because of Erie's success.
