Turnpikes
The states created turnpikes which were privately funded toll-based roads where users had to pay a toll. Profits were supposed to be used to repair roads but rarely were therefore they remained in poor condition.
Not many turnpikes made a profit or saved time and money. The only road which did have a benefit was the National Road. The National Road was completed in 1852 and ran from Cumberland to the Ohio River. It was made of crushed stone to prevent mud.
Although there wasn't any widespread success with turnpikes the ones that were successful did increase commerce and allowed transportation where railroads were unavailable.
